Understanding vibration patterns and intensity settings
Ten modes can sound impressive and still leave you using one. Here's how I judge power, pitch, patterns and controls before a toy reaches my bedside table.

The settings list tells you less than you think
I have compared toys with three modes that felt wonderfully complete and toys with thirty that made me want to find the manual halfway through. The number on the box is not a measure of quality. It is often a measure of how many slight variations the control button can cycle through.
Steady vibration is still the setting I use most. Patterns can be playful, especially if a continuous sensation makes you go numb or your attention wanders, but they are seasoning rather than the meal. I care far more about whether the steady speeds move smoothly from genuinely gentle to satisfyingly strong.
When a listing says 'ten vibration modes,' check whether that means ten intensities, ten rhythms or a mixture. Those are three different experiences, and product pages have an unfortunate habit of treating them as interchangeable.
Intensity has a floor as well as a ceiling
People ask me whether a toy is powerful, but power by itself isn't the whole question. I want to know its floor and its ceiling. A high ceiling is useful if you enjoy strong sensation; a low floor is what lets you warm up, use the toy on a sensitive day and share it with someone whose preferences differ from yours.
A first speed that arrives shouting makes the rest of the range less useful. This is especially true for pressure-wave products and compact bullets, where a small contact area can make moderate output feel much more intense than it would through a broad wand head.
I test every speed on the palm, inner forearm and through one layer of fabric before using it more intimately. Those aren't perfect proxies, but they reveal abrupt jumps. If speed three feels almost identical to speed two and speed four suddenly doubles the output, I note it—even if the maximum is impressive.
Rumbly and buzzy are clumsy words, but useful ones
Lower-frequency vibration tends to feel deeper and spread beyond the exact point of contact. That's what reviewers usually call rumbly. Higher-frequency vibration sits closer to the surface and can feel sharper or more ticklish; that's buzzy. Many motors produce a blend, and the character can change as the speed rises.
I lean rumbly because my body tires of surface buzz quickly, but that is a preference, not a verdict. Focused, higher-frequency toys can be excellent for someone who wants precision and doesn't enjoy sensation travelling into surrounding tissue.
Hold a running toy loosely rather than squeezing it. If your fingers tingle while the contact point feels underwhelming, too much energy is disappearing into the handle. Good motor isolation is one of those engineering details you can feel immediately and rarely see in the marketing copy.
Patterns work best when you can reach them on purpose
The common patterns are pulse, wave, escalation and combinations of short and long beats. Pulse gives clear breaks; wave rises and falls more gradually; escalation builds and then drops. If steady stimulation starts to fade into the background, a simple pulse is often more useful than a wildly complicated rhythm.
Patterns become frustrating when the toy has one button and no way to go back. Miss the mode you liked and you're taking another lap through the whole menu. I prefer a dedicated power button plus separate increase, decrease and pattern controls. At minimum, I want a quick off that doesn't depend on where I am in the sequence.
A memory function can be lovely if you always return to the same setting. It is less lovely if the toy wakes up at yesterday's maximum. I check whether memory stores both pattern and intensity, and whether holding the power button starts low or resumes exactly where I left it.
How I test a new motor without rushing my body
I begin at the lowest steady speed and move the toy rather than immediately turning it up. Changing pressure, angle and the amount of surface area in contact can transform the sensation without asking more from the motor. Through fabric is useful too; it softens a buzzy edge and spreads the feeling.
When I do increase intensity, I pause between steps. Bodies adapt, and climbing quickly can make a good mid-range feel weak simply because I sprinted past it. If sensation starts to feel numb or irritating, I stop or switch to gentler pressure. More power isn't a challenge to complete.
My ideal everyday control scheme is boring in the best possible way: a low first speed, evenly spaced increases, three buttons I can understand by touch and perhaps two patterns worth revisiting. I would choose that over thirty modes every single time.
