Water-based vs. silicone lubricant, explained

Water-based: the safe default

Water-based lubricant is compatible with every toy material and every condom type. It washes off with water, doesn't stain, and comes in the widest range of formulations — including glycerin-free and fragrance-free options for sensitive skin.

The trade-off is longevity. It absorbs and evaporates, so you'll reapply or refresh it with a little water.

Silicone: long-lasting, with one restriction

Silicone lubricant stays slick far longer, works in water, and needs very little product. It's a good match for longer sessions and for anyone who finds water-based formulas dry out too quickly.

The restriction: silicone lubricant can degrade the surface of silicone toys over time, leaving them tacky or pitted. Use a barrier, or switch to water-based with silicone products.

Hybrids and when they make sense

Hybrid formulas blend a water base with a small percentage of silicone for a creamier feel and longer wear. Compatibility depends on the specific formula — check the label rather than assuming.

Ingredients worth noticing

Glycerin, parabens, fragrance and warming agents are the ingredients most often flagged by people with sensitive skin. Osmolality and pH matter too, though they're rarely printed on the bottle.
