What 'waterproof' really means

IPX4, IPX6, IPX7 — and why 'splashproof' is not an invitation to the bath.

The rating scale, briefly

IPX4 is splash-resistant from any direction. IPX5 and IPX6 handle jets of water. IPX7 means the product can be submerged in up to one metre of water for thirty minutes.

Only IPX7 and above are genuinely bath- and shower-safe by the standard's definition.

Charging ports change the answer

Products with an exposed charging port are rarely fully submersible. Magnetic charging contacts usually indicate a properly sealed body.

Practical care

Rinse after use in salt water or a chlorinated pool, dry fully before charging, and don't submerge anything rated below IPX7 no matter how brief the dip.
