Porosity changes how a product can be maintained

Nonporous materials such as properly finished silicone, borosilicate glass, stainless steel and hard ABS plastic do not have the same network of tiny spaces that porous materials can have. That generally makes them easier to clean thoroughly. TPE, TPR and many realistic-feel elastomer blends may be softer and less expensive, but they can be porous and may require more careful cleaning, drying, separate storage and eventual replacement.

A material name is only one part of the decision. Seams, surface coatings, electronic openings and manufacturer care instructions can change what is safe for the complete product.

Feel and flexibility are practical differences

Silicone can range from plush and flexible to dense and firm. Glass and stainless steel are rigid, smooth and temperature-responsive; they do not yield when pressure is applied. ABS plastic is also firm but lighter. Elastomer products can feel soft and lifelike, though that softness often comes with more demanding care.

Choose firmness deliberately. A rigid curve can provide precise pressure but may feel unforgiving. A flexible shaft can adapt to movement but may be harder to direct. Neither quality is automatically safer or more pleasurable for every person.

Treat unsupported marketing terms cautiously

Phrases such as body-safe, medical-grade or hypoallergenic need context. Look for a specific material, clear care instructions and meaningful testing or standards when the manufacturer provides them. Latex-free and phthalate-free labels answer narrow questions; they do not describe every ingredient or guarantee that no individual will react.
